Made in Italy
The Italian agri-food system accounts for 15% of the national GDP, with an annual turnover exceeding 500 billion euros. Although Italy’s land area is roughly half that of Spain and France, the Italian agriculture maintains its leadership in the sector: it ranks first in Europe in terms of added value and third in terms of gross marketable production. Italy is the world’s leading wine producer by volume and the top European producer of vegetables by economic value. The annual value of agricultural production stands at around €60 billion, of which over 50% comes from crops, approximately 29% from cattle-farming and the remainder from support and secondary industries. There are more than 4,500 traditional products (Ministerial Decree 350/1999) whose methods of processing, preservation and aging are based on manufacturing rules that are typical of the so-called Made in Italy.
